According to The Guardian, Thomas Tuchel feels that Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour should have been called up by Scotland. The Scottish youngster was left out of the WC Qualifiers squad due to lack of game time at Chelsea.
Gilmour was among the several youngsters that broke into the first-team under Frank Lampard. The Scot instantly endeared himself to the fans with his showings last season, especially in the FA Cup game against Liverpool.
Despite his relatively young age and inexperience, he was able to boss a Liverpool midfield that included the likes of Fabinho.
His progress, though, was briefly halted due to a long-term knee injury. However, the youngster is now back to full fitness but has been overlooked by Tuchel so far.
Tuchel explained that it was his decision to keep the player when a loan deal came for him in January. He has urged Scotland to look past those issues and pick Gilmour, given that he has trained very well.
“It’s absolutely no mistake. It was unfortunately not his choice. It was my choice. The choice was made for Chelsea and not for the personal goals of Billy. He accepted it in a five-minute talk. I hope he knows how much I appreciate him.”
“He has three big problems: N’Golo Kanté, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho. I can only strongly recommend the Scottish national team to nominate him because this guy trains on the highest level. They should not be worried about his ability to compete.”
However, he has given some hint that Gilmour might just start the FA Cup quarter-final against Sheffield United. He assured that Gilmour is still in his plans and that he needs four midfielders to play, Gilmour being the fourth one.
