According to ESPN, Chelsea have delayed contract talks with Tammy Abraham over wage demands. While he was expected to put pen to paper last season, the same has not happened yet.
The club did trigger a 12-month extension on his current deal, which means that he will be at the club until 2023. That has given Chelsea more time to think things over and possibly start talks again after this season.
Abraham broke into the first-team last season under Frank Lampard and was a vital part of the side that finished fourth. However, the England international has seen his place slip down after the arrival of Thomas Tuchel and Timo Werner.
While the club have handed new deals to the likes of Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi, the same cannot be said about Abraham. Apparently, they are not willing to match the six-figure salary being demanded.
There is another reason that Chelsea are looking to sign another striker next season, which would further push Abraham down the pecking order.
There has been a recall of Olivier Giroud to the first-team picture, with Abraham seemingly not being given enough chances under Tuchel. Then there is Kai Havertz, who is starring in a false-nine role.
It makes sense for Abraham to consider his options because he could get sidelined furthermore if a new striker comes in. However, with a few more years on his deal, Chelsea do have some time to figure out what to do with Tammy, i.e. extend his stay or let him go.
