Chelsea stand to benefit from the sale of ex-star wanted by London rivals

Chelsea to benefit from Tariq Lamptey sale by Brighton

According to Express, Chelsea could benefit from Arsenal’s reported interest in Tariq Lamptey. The Blues sold off Lamptey to Brighton in January 2020 and currently rivals Arsenal are mulling over bringing in the youngster who has impressed in the short time at the Amex Stadium.

With limited chances of getting game time at Chelsea, Lamptey made the switch to Brighton on a permanent deal worth £3m in January. He featured in 8 games for Brighton in the remainder of the 2019/20 season. The Hillingdon-born full-back, with his consistent displays, made himself a rare bright spark amidst the club’s poor start to the campaign.

The fact that he’s already playing week in week out in the Premier League at the tender age of 20 points to a bright future in the game. An attacking full-back, Lamptey has also caught the eye with his work rate at Brighton. The youngster has excelled in both right-back and wing-back roles.

However, Chelsea did not include any sort of buy-back clause in the player’s contract. Marina Granovskaia did include a sell-on clause though. It could turn out to be a smart move as a host of clubs like Arsenal and Everton have lined up for his signature. Arsenal are the ones particularly interested in him.

Any negotiations with Brighton over a transfer fee could be made difficult with Chelsea likely to get a percentage. The Blues have inserted an undisclosed sell-on clause in his contract which will likely guarantee them a share of the spoils.

While it would have been better to have a buy-back clause, this scenario isn’t too bad with some cash coming Chelsea’s way in case Lamptey moves.
