Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Daily Mail), former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was not the least bit impressed by Chelsea star Timo Werner after his display against Atletico Madrid.
Goals have been hard to get for the former RB Leipzig man with just 10 in 34 appearances so far this term. While Ferdinand berated his performance, he did so citing the capabilities he knows Werner has.
“It’s frustrating watching him, because you’ve seen clips of what he can do. He gets into these areas, makes the keeper make a save, fair enough, but there’s far too many times when he’s loose in possession when building up, or decision making when he gets into these areas at times.
“Sometimes fast players have to slow the game down a bit. They’re running so fast everything seems to be a blur.”
Werner was a big-money signing from Leipzig in the summer transfer window and was expected to continue his goal-scoring exploits in England. However, he again failed to score on Tuesday night with just the one goal to show in the last 17 games.
Ferdinand’s fellow pundit, Steven McManaman echoed the ex-Man United man’s opinions.
“He just needs to sit down, study a few clips, this is where you’re going right, this is where you’re going wrong.”
Nonetheless, Chelsea will head back to Stamford Bridge with a one-goal advantage after Olivier Giroud’s goal in the first leg. Before that, Chelsea have to deal with Manchester United on the weekend.
