Rejuvenated Chelsea star wins club’s Goal of the Month award for January

Marcos Alonso wins Chelsea Goal of the Month award for January

Marcos Alonso has bagged the Chelsea Goal of the Month award for January (h/t Chelsea Official) for his stunning strike in the 2-0 win over Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard controlled a lovely dinked pass from teammate Christian Pulisic and executed a perfect volley that went in off the underside of the crossbar to seal a much-needed win for the Blues.

Chelsea Women stars Sophie Ingle and Niamh Charles were nominated for the award while Cesar Azpilicueta and Kai Havertz were also in the mix. But such was the quality of Alonso’s strike that he won the poll convincingly with more than three-quarters of the vote.

The 30-year-old has become the fifth different player at Chelsea to win a Goal of the Month award this season. Reece James was the first to do so back in September, thanks to his long-range stunner against Brighton. Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Olivier Giroud have been the other players to achieve the feat this season.

The Goal of the month award should be a massive confidence-booster for Alonso, who has found himself on the fringes at Stamford Bridge this season. The Spaniard only started three times in the Premier League until the middle of January as long as Frank Lampard was in charge.

The arrival of Ben Chilwell in the summer has certainly pushed Alonso down the pecking order. But the Spaniard has cut a rejuvenated figure since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, who has accommodated him to great success in his new-look 3-4-2-1 system.

Having found the net against Burnley, Alonso was once again among the standout performers in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over London rivals Tottenham on February 5. He has featured in three out of Tuchel’s first four games in charge, rediscovering his mojo in a wing-back role.

The former Fiorentina star had been linked with a move away from Chelsea earlier in the season due to his struggle for game time under Lampard. However, Alonso now looks set to play a key role for the club heading into the final quarter of the campaign.
