Speaking to ESPN (h/t Metro), French World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf singled out Mason Mount and Timo Werner after Chelsea winning against Newcastle. Leboeuf felt that Chelsea were very good in the first half but tailed off in the second.
Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner’s goals in the first half secured a vital win for Thomas Tuchel’s side as they broke into the top four. Newcastle looked much the better of two sides in the second half but the Blues ultimately held on for the win and the clean sheet.
Leboeuf, a former Chelsea defender, was impressed with Chelsea’s defending but pointed out their attack still being an area of concern. He went on to name Mount and Werner who he felt were ‘invisible’ in the second half.
I like what I saw for the first half when Chelsea really dominated, created chances and scored two goals. But in the second half, I wondered what they were doing. We lost Mount, we lost Werner, they were quite invisible. We got Kepa back, who made two good saves but that’s it.
On Chelsea’s attack, Leboeuf felt that the side make mistakes with the final pass and don’t take the correct decision. He was happy about Werner finally getting the goal and hoped it would help him move on from his rough patch.
However, he did go on to say that he wants to see Chelsea perform against a big team. While they might have climbed up to 4th, he does not believe they can sustain that. Chelsea’s next opponents are Southampton in the league on the weekend.
