“Brought down to earth”: 24-year-old star opens up on his Chelsea struggles

Timo Werner opens up on his Chelsea struggles

According to Kicker (h/t Daily Mail), Timo Werner opened up on his transition to the Premier League with Chelsea. The German striker said that he found it difficult to adjust to the intense and physical nature of the English game.

Werner was a big-money arrival for Chelsea this season as they went through a squad overhaul. However, despite his heroics for RB Leipzig last season, the 24-year-old has struggled since arriving at Stamford Bridge and goals have been hard to come by.

“The players are 1.9 meters tall, brutal physically and really fast – including the defenders. It’s impressive what intensity is going on in the Premier League. Of course, I noticed that in such a lull you are no longer necessarily called a super striker. I just had to let go of all the pressure of having to score goals.”

The Germany international further went on to add that it has been a humbling experience for him so far in England.

“At the beginning, I had this self-image that I can go on doing my thing here, but in the last few months I have been brought down to earth. It’s the way in England that you never have a quiet game.”

His 5 league goals should give a clearer picture of his struggles as he went 14 games without a goal before the Newcastle game. While Werner struggled under his previous boss Frank Lampard, things have been better with Thomas Tuchel.

More Chelsea News:

The key factor has been a change in position with Werner no longer a striker or winger. He plays as the left inside forward in a 3-4-2-1 used by Tuchel since his arrival. Only time will tell if Werner can get back to his prolific self under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel.
