Chelsea star Olivier Giroud speaks out on Mason Mount and his goal
Speaking to RMC Sport (h/t Metro), Olivier Giroud said that he would have been annoyed with Mason Mount had his goal against Atletico Madrid been disallowed.
The veteran Frenchman’s superb effort was enough to give Chelsea the edge over Atletico Madrid in the first leg.
On how the goal was scored, Marcos Alonso’s cross was met by Mason Mount who did not seem to control it that well. However, Mario Hermoso’s scuffed clearance popped the ball near Giroud at a decent height which he dispatched with a stunning overhead kick.
Although it was initially ruled offside, VAR corrected it and the goal stood. However, Chelsea striker Giroud spoke on how he would have given an earful to Mount because he tried to control it instead of letting the cross go to him.
“I was a bit lucky, the defender didn’t really go for it, I was a bit ahead. I said to Mason I am going to be annoyed with him if they don’t award me the goal because he touched the ball just before [from Marcos Alonso’s cross] when I could have had it and finished if he left it for me.”
Nonetheless, Giroud was happy with the goal and that it was not ruled offside. He also spoke about Chelsea not being effective around the final third but he knew that they were the better side and had good possession.
