Transfer News: Chelsea keen to trump European rivals to this world-class star in the summer

Thomas Tuchel urges Chelsea to hijack David Alaba transfer

According to The Guardian, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel wants the club to hijack Real Madrid’s move for Bayern Munich star David Alaba.

The 28-year-old’s contract with the European champions is set to expire in the summer and negotiations regarding a renewal have gotten nowhere. As things stand Real Madrid are leading the race to land him on a Bosman.

One of the best players to become available for free in recent years, Alaba is also coveted by the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool. His versatility combined with his experience makes him a player who can be trusted to perform from the word go.

Tuchel appears to be a fan of the player and has urged Chelsea to make their move for the player. According to German publication Bild (h/t Express), the Blues may not be out of the running just yet.

Negotiations with Madrid have not led to anything tangible yet, opening the possibility of the player switching to the Premier League. It would appear that Chelsea do hold the upper hand when it comes to English clubs in the race for the Austrian star. (h/t Express)

An improvement!

Chelsea do have a number of options available in defence. Thiago Silva has been a revelation while Kurt Zouma is enjoying a resurgent season. Antonio Rudiger is enjoying a new lease of life while Andreas Christensen could still showcase what he can do. If Fikayo Tomori returns from his loan, Chelsea will already have five centre-backs in their squad.

Despite this Tuchel is keen to strengthen his defensive options.  In Alaba, he would be getting a player in his prime, good enough to make a difference in the starting XI for years to come.
