Mason Mount was extremely talented as a youngster and seemed to have his heart set on Chelsea
Chelsea have seen several youngsters shine under the short regime of Frank Lampard, with Mason Mount being one of them.
The 21-year-old has always been on the books of Chelsea and made it through the youth team before a couple of loan spells at Vitesse and Derby County.
It was at Derby where he really made a name under Lampard. While the Rams narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, Mount and Lampard both had a lot of positives from that spell.
Mount became a regular in the following season when Lampard took over the job and the youngster has been one of the bright sparks in the team.
The 21-year-old was a talented youngster and many clubs were keen to check out his talent. His father, Tony, was speaking to the Sun and highlighted one incident which brought up the Chelsea love in the youngster.
Mount was training for Chelsea and Portsmouth at the time and he was invited to Southampton. The Saints wanted to see how their trialists would do against a Chelsea player.
Mount was with his father and didn’t want to wear any other jersey. However, things didn’t turn out all that great for the future Chelsea star.
“They split the boys into four teams and took them away to get changed. The first team came out wearing black, another in blue and then another in yellow”, said his father.
“I’m looking for Mason and thinking, ‘Please don’t come out in red and white! PLEASE don’t come out in red and white!’ And he’s come out in this red and white kit with a face like thunder.”
Scoring for fun
That seemed to irk Mount and his father highlighted the crazy number of goals he scored:
“He’s going ‘Dad! Dad!’ and pointing at the shirt. He played like a man possessed that night because he was so unhappy about this kit. He scored 14 goals.”
Southampton and Portsmouth tried to sign Mount but his mind was already made up for Chelsea. He signed for the Blues at the age of eight and became close friends with Declan Rice, who was also at the Chelsea academy.
Fate would have different paths for the two close friends. While Rice left the Blues to join West Ham, Mount has gone from strength to strength at Stamford Bridge.
