A report by Chronicle Live states that Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori would be offered to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.
The transfer would be a loan deal instead of a permanent one, and Newcastle have another option in that area. The Magpies are also targeting Manchester United full-back, Brandon Williams, on loan.
Both Williams and Tomori can play at right-back, with the latter being more adept as a centre-back. Steve Bruce, Newcastle’s manager, is reportedly a fan of the Chelsea defender.
Tomori himself wants more playing time. The 23-year-old is yet to appear in a game for Frank Lampard’s since September last year. (h/t Chronicle Live)
In fact, the defender has just 3 appearances for Chelsea this season, with just one coming in the Premier League. Chelsea have Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma as their trusted centre-backs.
Apart from them, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are also vying for minutes. In such a situation, Tomori has fallen way below in the Chelsea pecking order.
It is understandable why Newcastle want Tomori, who has experience playing for clubs such as Hull City and Derby County.
The Magpies are hovering just above the relegation zone and have one of the worst defences in the league. A player like Tomori would add depth and quality to their defence.
For Chelsea, it would also be a good move. The club is in no urgent need of defensive cover with all their senior centre-backs fit, and this can be a great opportunity for Tomori to gain Premier League experience.
At just 23 years of age, Tomori has a chunk of his career ahead of him. And, experience that he gains at this age can pay dividends for Chelsea in the future.
