Promising Chelsea starlet faces uncertain future amidst managerial shakeup

Billy Gilmour facing an uncertain future at Chelsea

Scottish youngster Billy Gilmour is one of the best young talents at Chelsea. The 19-year-old had his first-team breakout last season before spending months out injured.

Now back fit, he has continued from where he left off. Gilmour went on to pick up the man of the match award on his full Champions League debut against Krasnodar earlier this season. He managed the same in his Premier League and FA Cup full debuts as well.

Gilmour was held in high regard by Frank Lampard. With him now gone, there appears to be a lack of clarity about the player’s future at the club.

According to the Mirror, he could be set to depart the club once Thomas Tuchel takes over at Stamford Bridge.

The German manager will have days to offload players he doesn’t consider part of his plans at the club. Gilmour looks to be amongst those on the list with a loan move being mooted.

That is in contrast to what Lampard had in store for Gilmour. The former boss went on to claim at the weekend that he plans to see the youngster develop at Chelsea for the remainder of the season.

Leaving is the best choice

Gilmour has no shortage of teams lining up to take him on loan. The likes of Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all keen on the 19-year-old.

With the likes of N’Golo Kante, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Matteo Kovacic and Jorginho all ahead of him in the pecking order, Tuchel may seek to work with established stars than risk using an upcoming starlet.

Given his potential, there is every suggestion that Gilmour could turn into a leading midfielder in the future. He has so far shown the capability to compete at the top level and any drop in his standing could stall his development.

If Chelsea are unwilling to provide him the minutes at the Bridge, it will be in the best interests of everyone involved that he be allowed to leave on loan.
