Chelsea prepared to break club-record transfer fee to land priority target in the summer

Chelsea willing to spend lavishly on transfer priority Erling Haaland in the summer

A report by Simon Johnson of The Athletic (subscription required) states that Chelsea are prepared to break their transfer fee record for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland in the summer this year.

Haaland is in sensational form for the Black and Yellows since joining from RB Leipzig last year. He has 19 goals in 17 appearances for them so far this season and is one of the hottest prospects in the world.

The Norwegian has a release clause of £66.6m, but it only kicks in at the end of the 2021/22 season. Chelsea, however, are preparing to pay more than that this summer in order to land him a year before his clause activates.

The Blues are not the only club after the 20-year-old’s signature. Manchester City and Manchester United are both keen on signing him, while the player’s favoured destination is thought to be Real Madrid.

A mammoth signing on the cards?

Chelsea know that they will face competition for him. However, they are eager to sign Haaland as they wish to bring in a top striker at Stamford Bridge.

Moreover, Olivier Giroud is tipped to leave the club in the summer, while £54m summer signing Timo Werner is in a bit of slump right now.

The report also states that Chelsea feel the financial impact of Covid-19 on clubs also gives them an opportunity to capitalize on this situation.

Chelsea’s current record signing is Kai Havertz who joined from Bayer Leverkusen last year. His transfer fee could rise up to £80m if clauses within his contract are triggered.

Haaland would surely be a sensational signing for the club. His record speaks for itself and he is only 20 years of age.
