Karim Adeyemi reveals why he rejected a move to Chelsea
Speaking to Sport 1 (h/t Mirror), Karim Adeyemi has revealed why he rejected a move to Chelsea in 2018.
Then at German third division side SpVgg Unterhaching, the 18-year-old was making a name for himself as one to watch.
The Blues were aware of his potential and invited him to Cobham ahead of a potential move. He eventually moved to Austrian giant RB Salzburg who have build themselves a solid reputation for developing players.
Adeyemi has no regrets over his choice and believes the opportunity to play regularly was a major factor in his decision. He has so far made 25 appearances for Salzburg, scoring three goals and assisting eight more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
“First of all, it is important to me that I play regularly.”
The youngster is happy to be playing for Salzburg and is keen to give them his undivided attention. He has gone on to suggest that his decision to move is influenced by how comfortable he is at the club.
“I don’t know how the clubs work; after all, I don’t know the people responsible. But I would choose the club where I feel most comfortable.”
The staircase to stardom!
It is fair to say that Adeyemi would not have received the same amount of playtime that he does at Salzburg had he joined Chelsea. The Blues have promoted a number of youth players under Lampard, however, the prospect of an 18-year-old getting the nod over senior stars is unlikely.
Adeyemi’s preference for playtime over moving to one of Europe’s top sides is understandable. After all few teams are astute and developing talents such as Salzburg.
The likes of Sadio Mane, Marcel Sabitzer, Erling Haaland, and Takumi Minamino all made a name for themselves in Austria before seeking greener pastures elsewhere.
There is no reason why Adeyemi cannot do the same in the future. Who knows, Chelsea could open their doors to him once again.
