“You’re in it” – Arsenal legend gives surprise verdict on Chelsea’s title hopes

Paul Merson believes Chelsea are still title contenders

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Chelsea are still title contenders.

The Blues, at a point, were on the verge of going top of the Premier League. However, a poor run of results in December has seen them drop down to ninth, 10 points off the top.

Chelsea can close that gap to seven points if they beat Fulham on Saturday. Manchester United and Liverpool set to take on each other this weekend, a win for the latter will stop the former from pulling away.

Merson believes that the table is close to call, giving Chelsea a way back into the title race.

“I still don’t think Chelsea are out of it. Whoever you are, put five wins together and you’re in it.”

United have proved this season that a bit of luck can go a long way in turning your fortunes. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have had the rub of the green a number of times. It is fair to say that their position at the top does not reflect in their performances.

Merson also called for Lampard to be given time to set things right. Having spent a significant sum in the summer, the pressure was always going to be on the manager to deliver.

While there have been promising performances, a lack of consistency and struggles faced by summer signings have limited our results. Hopefully, Lampard will be given the time needed and can turn it around in the coming weeks.

Chelsea will hope for a better run of results in january than in December. With more than half the season still to go, there is plenty to play for.

Lampard can, hopefully, complete a turnaround that will see us end the season with a trophy or two.
