Chelsea to lose out on 28-year-old superstar as La Liga giants in pole position to sign him

Real Madrid set to win the race to sign Chelsea target David Alaba

A report by Spanish outlet Marca (h/t Mirror) states that Real Madrid are very close to signing defensive superstar and recent Chelsea target David Alaba.

Alaba is in the final few months of his contract with his current club Bayern Munich. The negotiations between the German club and the player broke down and became hostile after Alaba’s exorbitant wage demands.

Amidst this, the Austrian defender has attracted interest from many clubs, including Chelsea. However, Real Madrid are now reportedly leading the race to sign him after already tabling an offer. (h/t Mirror)

The Spanish giants have tabled a contract worth £8.9million a year for the Austrian international. Apart from Real and Chelsea, three other Premier League clubs were linked with him recently.

Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool are all set to lose out on the 28-year-old as well. Los Blancos see Alaba as a replacement for captain Sergio Ramos who could depart next summer.

A missed opportunity

Alaba is open to listening offers from foreign clubs in this January transfer window over a free move in the summer. While there is no shortage of suitors, Madrid are confident they will convince the player to sign.

This could be a blow for the Blues considering David Alaba’s experience, ability, and versatility. He can play in midfield, at left-back, or as a centre-back.

Such a serial winner at Stamford Bridge would have undoubtedly raised the quality in the squad. Thiago Silva, as good he is this season, is 36 years old and cannot keep playing on forever.

In such a scenario, the Bayern defender would have made for a great replacement. Nevertheless, the club still has plenty of time to look elsewhere if they want to sign a defender.
