A report by Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Mirror) claims that Olivier Giroud can leave Chelsea in January, but will have to hand in a transfer request himself to make it happen.
Olivier Giroud was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge last season because of a lack of playing opportunities.
The French international started just 12 games in the Premier League last term. Despite a lack of starts, he still scored 8 goals (h/t Transfermarkt)
It looked like that would be the case again this season as Giroud struggled heavily to find game-time at the beginning of this campaign.
The 34-year-old was behind new signing Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham for most of the season.
However, a 4-goal haul in the UEFA Champions League changed that. Giroud scored all 4 goals in Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Sevilla on matchday 5 to win their Champions League group.
Since then, the former Montpellier striker has started in all 3 of Chelsea’s Premier League games. He has netted twice in that time, despite the Blues losing 2 of those 3 matches.
The French veteran has just 6 months remaining on his contract at the moment. This means he will be able to enter negotiations with a foreign club in January over a move in the summer.
The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge recently. Inter Milan and MLS side Inter Miami have both been credited with an interest in the striker. (h/t football.london)
However, he has recently pushed his way back into Lampard’s team just before the January transfer window opens.
Even at the age of 34, Giroud has looked dangerous in front of goal and has the statistics to warrant his starting position at the club.
