Lampard downplays Chelsea comparisons to previous title-winning sides

Frank Lampard admits Chelsea cannot be compared to Liverpool and Manchester City

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard insists the Blues cannot replicate the performances synonymous with Liverpool and Manchester City in recent seasons.

Both teams set new standards in new seasons as they were head and shoulders above the rest of the sides in the league. While City have enjoyed a mixed season so far, Liverpool will go into yet another Christmas top of the table.

“We are not a Liverpool of last year or a Manchester City of the year before where you can just go out and win, win, win, win, win.”

The Blues enjoyed a good spell of late after a mixed start to the season. It also saw us briefly top the table, with Jurgen Klopp going on to label us favourites for the competition.

Since then, we have lost both Premier League games and have fallen nine points behind Liverpool. The gap can however be reduced to six if we defeat West Ham on Monday.

Unlike City and Liverpool, Chelsea is still a team under development. While we may have brought in a number of excellent players, they will need time to develop as a team that fights for one another.

“Their teams have probably been together longer and built for longer which builds confidence within the group of players that they can deal with things better in games.”

Slow but steady progress!

While we may not yet be ready to go toe to toe with Liverpool, Lampard believes his side have closed the gap to the top.

The title race this season looks far from a foregone conclusion with a number of teams still in it. In fact, we could very well be back at the top if a couple of gameweeks swing our way.

The Chelsea squad has its mixture of youth and experience. Lampard expects them to get stronger over time and grow stronger when faced with adversity.

“I just think with a group that has been together for a long time and maybe suffered some tough moments and failures.”

While we are a competitive team, there is still ways for us to go before being considered as juggernauts. Liverpool to their credit have suffered disappointments in the past and have come back stronger each season under Klopp.

The team spirit and relentless pursuit of victory was not born overnight and needs time to be inculcated in the squad. It is something we should strive to achieve in the seasons to come.
