Peter Crouch tells Chelsea new boy Timo Werner to be less selfish and settle down
Responding on his column in The Daily Mail, Peter Crouch has urged Timo Werner to get his Chelsea career back on track by learning to be less selfish.
The German ace was one of our big signings in the summer. He is currently going through a goal drought that has extended to ten matches.
“He is taking shots on when he should be passing. Strikers should be selfish but not when it is to the detriment of the team.”
Despite not finding the back of the net, Werner continues to impress with his off-the-ball movement. That too has suffered in recent matches, with the striker taken off at half-time against Arsenal.
Crouch appears to be keeping a keen eye on Werner and believes the player will be fine once he settles down. He went on to add that the striker’s insistence to go for a shot when a pass was available has not helped his team.
“He’ll be fine, eventually, he just needs to settle down.”
As a striker, Werner will be judged by the goals he scores. However, this had led to him frustrating his teammates, who would have been in a better position had he passed the ball.
“Werner is anxious and wants to break this sequence, but there was a moment against West Ham when he smashed a shot and his team-mates reacted with frustration.”
A different perspective!
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was also displeased with Werner’s performance at Arsenal. The striker could find himself on the bench for tonight’s match against Aston Villa.
Werner’s ability is well known and he has not had the worst of starts to his Blues career. Crouch may be right in his assessment that the striker is trying too hard to overcome his drought.
Watching the game from the bench tonight could give the striker a new perspective and help him deal better with the crisis.

As someone who has endured a goal drought himself, Crouch’s advice to Werner comes from experience. While the German could go on to become a much bigger player than Crouch, he will do well to heed the Englishman’s words.
