Chelsea earmark Thomas Tuchel to replace Frank Lampard if he cannot turn the club’s fortunes around
According to German publication Bild (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea could turn to Thomas Tuchel if Frank Lampard fails to address the club’s current slide.
The Blues have lost three of their last four Premier League games. This has seen us fall down the table. With a number of stars struggling to reach top gear, manager Frank Lampard is under increasing pressure to turn around his side’s fortunes.
Tuchel who led PSG to the Champions League final season was relieved of his duties at the Parc des Princes last week.
The 47-year-old is an experienced manager with spells at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund. He is not keen to take a sabbatical and is said to be interested in managing at the Bridge if given the opportunity.
The German has received a pay-off of £5.4million and would be free to take over at another club right away.
According to the report, he will relish working alongside German internationals Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Antonio Rudiger. Given how the former two have struggled so far, a new manager might be tasked with getting the best out of the duo.
It is not the first time that Tuchel has been linked with the Chelsea job. The German was contacted by the club following his departure from Dortmund in 2017.
The pros and the cons
Tuchel is a manager who deploys exciting football and is also good at player development. The likes of Ousmane Dembele, Christian Pulisic and Julian Weigl all experienced great progress under him at Dortmund.
He does however have the potential to be a poisoned chalice. Tuchel is quite outspoken and has clashed with his co-workers at previous jobs.
His relationship with Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke and PSG Sporting Director Leonardo wasn’t the healthiest. Nicknamed ‘The Professor’, Tuchel is a hands-on coach who has the ability to become a leading name in the game.

One would suspect that talks of Lampard being replaced right now is mere speculation. The clamour will however only grow louder if results fail to pick up.
As a former player, Lampard is well aware of Roman Abramovich’s impatience when it comes to hiring and firing. While being a club legend may offer him some leeway, it may not extend to blind faith.
It is time for Lampard to prove that Chelsea already have the right man at the helm to take them forward.
