Frank Lampard throws his backing behind misfiring Chelsea ace Timo Werner
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has backed Timo Werner as the striker continues to go through a goal drought.
The German ace was one of our top signings of the summer. Despite some good performances, he has found it difficult to put up numbers he did in the Bundesliga.
Werner’s tally of eight goals and six assists in 21 games is far from catastrophic. However, he has now failed to score in his last nine games for the club. (h/t Transfermarkt)
“I’m not worried.”
He was similarly ineffectual yesterday against West Ham United. The German started on the left of a front three and saw fellow striker Tammy Abraham star with a brace in the second half. With Olivier Giroud also impressing, Werner is the odd man out.
Despite his struggles, Werner continues to be in Lampard’s good books. The Blues’ boss believes the striker has shown enough ability to trouble opposition defences and is getting into good positions.
“He’s a player in a new league and we have to give him time to settle but he’s getting positions regularly, he’s scaring teams and giving them a problem.”
Lampard also went on to add that Werner needs just one goal to get the monkey off his back. He has predicted the striker to go on a prolific run once he overcomes the current drought.
“It’s unfortunate but he’s getting in the positions – when one goes in it will be a run for him.”
With another London derby, this time against Arsenal coming up next, Werner has an excellent opportunity to rediscover his scoring shoes. The Gunners are struggling for form and are there for the taking if we turn up.

Werner established himself as one of Europe’s deadliest marksmen at RB Leipzig. The Blues landing him in the season was nothing short of a coup.
Werner recently admitted he is struggling to adapt to the style and hectic schedule of the English game. He, however, remains undaunted and is keen to overcome the challenges. It appears to be just a time before he gets going.
