English legend gives his verdict on Chelsea’s chances in the Champions League

Alan Shearer expects Chelsea to see off Atletico Madrid in the Champions League

As reported by the Daily Star, English football legend Alan Shearer has backed Chelsea to make it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

The Blues were handed a tough draw when we drew Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. The La Liga side are one of the most dogged contenders in the competition and will prove to be a real test.

It will also see us come face to face against former striker Chelsea striker Diego Costa. The veteran may not be the tour de force of old but remains a player to be reckoned with.

“I would expect all the English sides to progress in the Champions League.”

Having played in Europe’s premier competition for three years with Newcastle United, Shearer is well aware of what it takes to compete amongst the best.

He believes all three English teams left in the competition are capable of progressing to the last eight of the tournament.

“City, Chelsea and Liverpool all have a very good chance of making it through to the quarter-finals.”

Liverpool face RB Leipzig while Manchester City face Borussia Monchengladbach in what is comparatively the easiest of the three matchups.

Shearer, however, expects defending champions Bayern Munich to not let off this season. The German giants have looked impressive under Hansi Flick and remain one of the favourites for the title.

The Bavarians are a team Chelsea are familiar with, having met them in the knockout stages last season. Then a team in transition, we were thoroughly outplayed across both legs.
