Ian Wright blames Chelsea losing to Everton on the absence of two key stars
According to BBC’s Match of the Day (h/t The Metro), Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Chelsea struggled in the absence of Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic against Everton.
The Blues slipped to a 1-0 defeat, courtesy of a penalty given away by Edouard Mendy. The loss saw us miss the opportunity to go top.
Both players are suffering from hamstring injuries. The same as another winger on the sidelines – Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Despite the duo’s absence, Chelsea were able to put up a formidable front three of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Olivier Giroud. Midfielder Mason Mount provided the attacking impetus from midfield but we were unable to breach Jordan Pickford’s goal.
The Blues went close on numerous occasions, even hitting the post twice. Ultimately, it was a case of being too close yet too far.
According to the report, Wright believes the missing duo could have made he difference on the night.
“Maybe as a game, if Ziyech and Pulisic were playing – a little bit more creativity – they might have got something.”
The loss was also an eye opener on the fine margins that could decide the title race.
Chelsea are still within touching distance of both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. With more than half of the season still to go, there are a lot of twists and turns to be had.
However, it is up to us to ensure we make the most of our chances and stay on top of things. Only then can we have our Premier League destiny in our hands.
