Former Chelsea star names key player who should share fault with Mendy for Everton gaffe

Frank Lebouef believes Thiago Silva was also at fault for Chelsea penalty vs Everton

Summer signings Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy have both been pivotal to the improved defensive showing we have put up this season.

The trip to Goodison Park showed us that while we are more formidable, we are also far from being invincible.

Edouard Mendy gave away a penalty that Gylfi Sigurdsson converted to give the Toffees all three points. Despite creating a number of chances, we could not find a way into the Everton goal.

Chelsea veteran Frank Lebouef believes both Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy were at fault for the Everton penalty.

While Mendy was at fault for the error that gave away the penalty, he was far from the only player involved in the incident.

That is the opinion of former Chelsea defender Frank Lebouef. According to ESPN FC (h/t The Metro), the Frenchman believes Silva should have done better in dealing with Jordan Pickford’s long punt forward.

“I think I will put Thiago Silva guilty for the penalty as well because he didn’t attack the ball, he was hesitating, he thought that Mendy would go out which he did but too late.”

Chelsea lost to Everton on Saturday

The mix-up between Mendy and Silva proved to be catastrophic. While we may have lost, thankfully, Manchester City and Tottrnham Hotspur both dropped points, keeping us within the hunt for the title.

Silva and Mendy have been almost flawless this season. It is inevitable that they will make mistakes from time to time.

Who was responsible for the penalty does not matter, with the game done and dusted. It is time we ensure the disappointment of yesterday is channeled into something stronger.
