Lampard defends Chelsea star after match-losing howler against Everton

Lampard defends Mendy after critical error against Everton

According to Football.london, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has come out in support of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Blues were abruptly stopped in their tracks as they fell to former boss Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at Goodison Park yesterday. Mendy gave away the decisive penalty that the Toffees converted via Gylfi Sigurdsson.

It is the first major error by the Senegalese international, who replaced Kepa Arrizabalaga as the club’s number one.

Edouard Mendy had been spectacular for Chelsea so far

Lampard to his credit is keen to support his goalkeeper, who has been immaculate since joining from Rennes. It can be argued that the 28-year-old has accumulated enough goodwill for us to let this one slide.

“Clearly not just his mistake either. Our mentality with second balls wasn’t good. We gave them a head start.”

While it is debatable that mendy could have done better, it will do little for us to look to lay the blame with the match already gone. Rather we should be looking to avoid making such errors going forward.

Ben Chilwell is an injury worry for Chelsea
Chilwell gave away a second penalty but thankfully it was overturned

The Blues could have gone top had they won against Everton. Unfortunately, our second loss in two years at the venue has seen us stay put behind Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea gave away a second penalty on the night after Ben Chilwell fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the penalty area. Thankfully, the decision was overturned, thanks to an offside leading up to the incident.

The Blues did not necessarily deserve to lose the game. We went close on a number of times, even hitting the post twice.

Unfortunately, it was not our night. Chelsea next face Wolverhampton Wanderers and will look to get back to winning ways against the Pack.
