The left-back joined us in the summer and has qickly established himself as the first-choice left-back at the club.

Chilwell has been a dominant force on the flank, contributing at both ends of the pitch. He already has two assists this season, the same as James, who plays on the other flank.

Unlike our expensive summer recruits, James is a player who came through the club’s youth academy. He is amongst a number of such players currently asserting themselves in the senior squad.

The youngster has grown in stature and is currently a first XI player at the club. His distribution was on show when he provided the cross for Olivier Giroud’s equaliser against Leeds United.

“I knew how good Reece was before I came here but I just wanted to say how much he’s surprised me.”

Chilwell believes James is a brilliant player who is difficult to play against. Still just 21, he still has his best years ahead of him.

“He’s very difficult to play against because of how physical he likes to be against his opponents.”

Giroud too has come out and praised James’ ability to put in a cross. In fact, he has named the youngster as one of the three best crossers at the club.

As someone who has thrived off such balls all his career, Giroud’s statement is more significant than what meets the eye.

Liverpool currently have the best full-back pairing in the league in trent Alexander-Arbold and Andy Robertson. The duo has probably revolutionised the way full-backs are used in the modern game.

Hopefully in time, Chilwell and James will meet the same standards if not better.
