South American star from La Liga teases Chelsea fans with social media activity

Uruguayan international Jose Gimenez hints at Chelsea transfer desire

According to Football.london, Atletico Madrid star Jose Gimenez has hinted once again at a desire to play for Chelsea in the future.

The Uruguayan international’s desire to don the Blue jersey was also reported by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano earlier this year. Given his acumen in the transfer market, his words can be taken as gospel.

Gimenez for his part did little to quell rumours after liking a tweet that joked, “Day 44 of tweeting Jose Maria Gimenez until @ChelseaFC signs him.”

Chelsea’s capture of Thiago Silva, Edouard Mendy and Ben Chilwell have seen a turnaround in fortunes for the club at the back. This is in stark contrast to what was seen as a massive weakness going into this season.

However, at 36, Silva is not a long-term option for the club. A replacement will have to be brought in and Gimenez is amongst those under the microscope.

The Atletico star is an excellent defender who is an integral part of Diego Simeone’s system. He has developed into one of the finest defenders on the continent.

It was reported earlier this year that Chelsea was leading the race to land Gimenez. The Uruguayan international is also a self-confessed fan of the Blues.

He admitted that he followed the club as a kid and that it would have been a dream come true to share the field with Lampard. While sharing the dressing room as players may be out of the question, he could very well play under the imperious Englishman at the Bridge.

A massive sticking point could be Gimenez’s £108m release clause. While he is an excellent defender, it is debatable if he is worth more than what the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Aymeric Laporte cost.

It remains to be seen if Gimenez will have his dream of playing for Chelsea come true.
