A View From The Bridge

“A massive change” – Young Chelsea star has a heartfelt discussion on the problems posed by racism

Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi calls for more to be done to eradicate racism

According to Beats by Dre and Chelsea FC discussion (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi believes more needs to be done to end racism in football.

The video recorded was alongside the club’s first black player Paul Canoville. Both Canoville and Hudson-Odoi have been subjected to racist abuse at various levels.

While racism is an accepted problem today, Hudson-Odoi believes what is being done today is not enough. He believes a massive change needs to take place for things to improve.

“I think that there’s got to be a massive change. We keep saying it day in day out, we’ve got to change something in football because you don’t want to feel that kind of way about anything.”

Discrimination of any basis should have no place in any walk of life, let alone sport. However, the truth is something else entirely.

Racial profiling is something that takes place at certain arenas. Hudson-Odoi believes that should not be the case.

“Our skin colour should never affect football.”

Profiling is something that is not just limited to the uneducated or initiated. After all, FA chairman Greg Clarke had to resign after making rather unsavoury comments against a number of ethnical groups.

Canoville was at Stamford Bridge for five years. He opened up on the difficulties his parents faced and also is in disbelief that racism is still prevalent in society today.

“For me, it’s what my parents went through. I was proud to be black.”

Canoville was subjected to racial abuse the day he made his debut for the club 38 years ago. What should have been a memorable moment, turned into one that he would look back with disappointment.

It is not possible that racism will be gone in a flash. As history has shown, even after all the sacrifices people have made, we still exist in a society where it exists.

Clearly, what we are doing now isn’t enough.
