Scottish youngster Billy Gilmour was one of the youngsters who made a name for himself at Chelsea last season.
Frank Lampard made liberal use of the young talents at the club and the 19-year-old took his opportunity with both hands. A particularly standout performance against Liverpool thrust him to the spotlight.
He featured regularly in subsequent weeks and even was preferred over Jorginho after the restart last season.
Unfortunately, an injury sustained at Selhurst Park ended his season and he has not featured since. Now back in training, he played against Croatia for the Scotland Under-21 side yesterday night.
The summer recruitment at Chelsea has led to an increase in competition for spots in the starting XI. According to Football.london, Gilmour admits that it will not be easy to get regular minutes thanks to the quality at the club.
“I’m just working hard to continue my form when I’m back from injury but it’s going to be a hard team to get into.”
Despite the increased difficulty, there is an opportunity for Gilmour to learn from some of the best players in the world. The youngster admits that the timing of the injury was bad. Thankfully, he is recovering well.
“It wasn’t the best timing. I’ve been out for four months with the meniscus in my right knee but the recovery has been going well.”
He is getting fitter now and will soon be part of the first team. He recently enjoyed a fruitful return to training when he nutmegged Timo Werner. Clearly, the lad is up to the challenge.
His outing for Scotland was one that the player would not like to remember. He lasted just nine minutes before getting sent off. Hopefully, he will fare better when he returns for Chelsea.
