“Disgraceful” – England legends defend under-fire Chelsea star

Ian Wright and Ashley Cole defend Chelsea ace Mason Mount

According to ITV (h/t The Metro), Ian Wright and Ashley Cole have backed under-fire Chelsea star, Mason Mount.

The Blues youngster has come under increased scrutiny after becoming a regular for the English national team. There was a widespread call for the player to be replaced by Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish.

Both players started and Grealish went on to score and assist in the 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland.

Despite Grealish’s heroics, Mount gave an excellent account of himself. Speaking ahead of the match, Wright believes criticism of the Chelsea star is unfair and he fully deserves his spot in Gareth Southgate’s side.

“I think it’s disgraceful the way people have talked about Mason Mount getting his berth in front of whoever.”

The former Arsenal ace believes Mount is in the team due to his performances. A regular for Chelsea, he believes the spot is earned.

“Mount is in there on credit and what he’s able to do. It’s unfair the amount of stick he gets for being chosen by Gareth.”

Cole meanwhile believes there is no basis to compare Grealish and Mount. He believes both players play different roles, making the comparison pointless.

“The quality that Mason brings to not just this England team but the Chelsea team. He brings that energy, the willingness to run and graft.”

The former Blue believes Mount brings a lot of energy and graft to the team. Southgate and Frank Lampard are good at what they do and Mount certainly has the skill, even if the armchair pundits cannot see it.

The agenda against Mount is akin to the unsubstantiated hate that Jordan Henderson receives. The Liverpool skipper, however, does his talking on the pitch and has lifted numerous major trophies in recent seasons.

Mount does not need to listen to detractors. As long as he keeps improving, those in charge will see his value even if others cannot.
