PL rivals keen on loaning talented Chelsea starlet this January

Newcastle United keen on loaning Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori in January

According to The Northern Echo (h/t Football.london), Newcastle United are interested in taking Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on loan in the January transfer window.

The young defender has seen opportunities come at a premium at the Bridge this season. Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma have formed an excellent understanding are the clear first choice central defenders at the club.

With Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger also available, Tomori is far from being guaranteed of game time.

That may not be the case if he decides to move to Tyneside. Magpies boss Steve Bruce is keen to inject pace into his rather inertial backline.

Tomori fits the bill well and could be a shrewd signing for the club. Moreover, Chelsea will also benefit from the player playing regularly.

The 22-year-old has made just three appearances for the Blues this season. Two of them have come in the League Cup while the other remains 45 minutes of action against Liverpool in the Premier League.

It can be argued that Tomori only even played against the Reds due to Andreas Christensen’s red card. With the Blues out of the Carabao Cup, his opportunities will be limited.

The youngster was also linked with a loan move away in the summer. In fact, he was close to joining West Ham United.

Tomori however turned down the opportunity and decided to stay and fight at Chelsea. Safe to say that it has not gone according to plan. He could still rectify that decision when the January window opens.

More than a lack on Tomori’s part, his absence has more to do with the excellent performances put up by Zouma and Silva.

Rather than risk losing time developing himself, he will be better off seeking more game time elsewhere. Newcastle are more certain to provide him that in comparison to Chelsea.

A move away could be the best decision for all parties involved.
