Frank Lampard praised Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic after Sheffield United win

According to the Metro, Frank Lampard has lavished praise on Chelsea star Mateo Kovacic after the win over Sheffield United.

The Blues overcame a 1-0 deficit to come back and win 4-1. It was an excellent performance that saw a number of our summer signings come to the fore.

We have had an excellent summer where a number of key players were brought in. This has led to intense competition for places that has affected some of the old guard.

One of them is Kovacic. The Croatian was a mainstay in the Blues lineup last season. He has, however, played less of a regular role this time around.

Perform or perish!

The match yesterday was just Kovacic’s ninth appearance of the season. In fact, this was his first start in the league since the 3-3 draw away to West Bromwich Albion

The 26-year-old was taken away in disgrace at half time that day. Yesterday however he gave a fine account of himself much to the joy of his manager. (h/t Metro)

“I think Kovacic when you look at our squad this year we have competition, as top teams generally do, and I need players who can come in lift the level, and bring something different.”

“It’s not easy to come in when you’ve missed a few games and he played very well.”

The fact that a player of Kovacic’s ability is available to be called upon shows the strength in depth we currently possess.

The new signings too are now coming to the fore, much to the joy of both the manager and the fans. As long as the players are ready to perform when called upon, there is scope for us to end the season with a trophy.
