Timo Werner reveals why he took the Chelsea penalties against Rennes
According to BT Sport (h/t The Daily Star), Timo Werner has revealed why he took the Chelsea penalties in the win over Rennes.
The Blues won the game 3-0, of which the first two goals were courtesy of penalties. Werner was the man entrusted with taking them and he dispatched both with ease.
This despite the presence of regular penalty taker Jorginho on the pitch. The Italian has had a rough time of late and has missed twice from the spot this season.
According to the report, Werner revealed that Lampard asked him to take the penalties, hinting at it helping with his confidence.
“There was no theme this week. Before the game, the manager told me if there’s a penalty I should take it today.”
The choice to do so works right into Werner’s aim to score more goals. He admits that penalties do play a part when it comes to increasing one’s tally.
“When you want to score 20 or more goals you have to take a few penalties in a season.”
Werner went on to add that Jorginho is fine with him taking the spotlight from the spot. The German believes it showcases the togetherness of the team with all players pulling in the same direction.
The 24-year-old hinted at looking forward to taking more penalties. It remains to be seen if the game was a one-off or if Werner is now our go-to penalty taker.
“I hope I can continue to score goals and take penalties.”
Goals are the life-breath of a striker. Adding more to his tally will only do Werner a world of good.
