According to The Sun, West Ham United are ready to make a significant financial contribution to fend off Chelsea from making a move for Declan Rice.
Chelsea were keen to sign the 21-year-old this summer. However, they gave up without lodging a formal bid. This came after the Hammers demanded at least £80million for the midfielder.
A key player for the Hammers, the London-based side are keen to ensure Rice’s payday matches his stature as the team’s most prized commodity.
Rice has three and a half years left on his contract,. He currently earns £60,000-a-week. The new terms will seek to double his current salary.
Given that his current wages pale in comparison to Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko. While the duo are excellent players in their own right, it is debatable if they carry the same significance to the team as Rice.
Moreover, the improved payday is expected to act as a deterrent to Chelsea’s interest.
Rice, to his credit, has not let news of our interest in him affect his game. He continues to go from strength to strength while maintaining perfect professional integrity.
The Hammers star is close friends with Chelsea star Mason Mount. The Duo came up together through the Blues academy before Rice was released at the age of 14.
While West Ham may be able to present better terms, Chelsea can be expected to trump their offer. In fact, matching West Ham’s offer will make him only the club’s eighth highest earner.
