According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), Kevin Phillips has backed Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger in January.
The German international is out of favour at the club and is yet to feature for the first-team this season.
With Thiago Silva’s signing effectively making Rudiger the club’s fifth-choice centre-back, he was expected to leave the club on loan before the window shut last week.
However, that was not to be and the 27-year-old stayed put at Stamford Bridge. He was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham, now managed by former Blues boss Jose Mourinho.
Rudiger held positive talks with the Portuguese tactician but eventually chose against making the move. According to The Daily Mail, he was worried about the fallout with the fans if he joined one of the club’s biggest rivals.
With him now set to stay at least until January, it remains to be seen if Lampard will make use of his skills.
German national team boss Joachim Low also confirmed that the player could be on his way out of Chelsea in January.
“I think he’ll try to leave again in the winter.”
With the Euros set to be held next summer, spending time out in the cold will do little to boost Rudiger’s chances. A move elsewhere with regular game time could see him make the German squad for the tournament.
Rudiger has made 115 appearances for Chelsea so far. During this time, he has won six goals and two assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
