“They’ve all made mistakes” – Blues hero urges Lampard against selling out-of-favour Chelsea star

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink urges Chelsea against selling Antonio Rudiger

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t The Metro), former Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbiank believes Frank Lampard will be selling his best defender in Antonio Rudiger.

The German ace has played a largely peripheral role this season. With the arrival of Thiago Silva, it can be argued that Rudiger is the fifth-choice centre-back at the club.

“They’ve all made mistakes but for me their best centre-back is Rudiger.”

He has failed to play even a single minute so far and could be on his way out this summer.

Antonio Rudiger is likely to leave Chelsea

Interest in the player is high. The likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and PSG are all keeping tabs on the Blues outcast.

Hasselbaink believes there is more to Rudiger’s absence than what meets the eye. He believes there is something in the background for the club’s best defender not to play.

“He normally smells danger and he clears it up. For Rudiger not to have played yet something is going on.”

To be fair to Hasselbaink, he did mention ‘within the club’. All of our centre-backs enjoyed a difficult 2019/20 season. Amongst them, Rudiger did stand out as one of the better options.

However, saying that he was the best out of a bad lot hardly makes him a competent player capable of implementing the club’s vision.

While Rudiger is on his day a dominant player, he does not perform to his level consistently. With the window set to close on Monday, it remains to be seen where he eventually ends up.

While Chelsea prefer to loan out Rudiger, they are keen to see him pen a new deal before doing so. The player however does not seem too keen on doing so.

The 27-year-old joined Chelsea in 2017 from AS Roma. He has since gone on to rack up 115 appearances for the club.
