Lautaro Martinez was not interested in joining Chelsea
According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb (h/t The Express), Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez rejected an opportunity to join Chelsea earlier this summer.
The Argentine international has thrived at the San Siro since joining the club in 2018. He has so far made 87 appearances for the Nerazzuri scoring 33 goals and assisting nine more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Martinez has gotten off to an excellent start this time around. So far, he has scored three goals and made one assist in just three matches.
The 23-year-old’s rejection was not acutely felt as we moved on to sign German ace Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. While the German is yet to get his motor going, he has been impressive enough and could be a leading striker in the years to come.
According to the report, Werner was an alternative to Martinez. Given his quality, we cannot think of a better backup who would’ve been the top target for a number of other teams.
Martinez, meanwhile, is keen to move to Barcelona or Real Madrid. If he continues to score as he is currently doing, there is no reason to believe he won’t get his dream move.
Werner, on the other hand, is excited to play in what he calls the biggest league in the world. The 24-year-old led the Leipzig line with aplomb as the German side enjoyed a good run in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
“It is a little bit of a dream come true to come and play now in the biggest league in the whole world”
A dynamic player with pace and movement, he could form a devasting triumvirate alongside Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz. Throw in Hakim Ziyech and the line-up is nothing short of a cheat code on paper.
