Newcastle United are interested in taking Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori on loandoi

Tomori lifts the lid on his decision to stay put at Chelsea

Speaking on the Chelsea Mike’d up podcast (h/t Metro), Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori has revealed why he did not leave the club on loan this summer.

The 22-year-old looked to be on his way to West Ham United on a season-long loan. The deal, however, fell apart on deadline day and he stayed put at Stamford Bridge.

“I had a plan going into this season going off the back of last season.”

He is keen to get back to the levels that he showcased at the beginning of last season. By choosing to stay on at Chelsea, it would appear that he has met the challenge head on.

“I made the decision in the end to stay, to improve more, get some more games, gain some more experience and try and get to the levels I was at last season.”

Tomori has made three appearances for Chelsea this season. He particularly impressed when he came on as a second-half substitute against Liverpool.

Given that we were down to ten men at that point, it is fair to say that Tomori did an excellent job in the circumstances.

Tomori is behind the likes of Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma in the Chelsea pecking order.

The young defender made the decision to stay and time will tell whether it is the right decision or not.

It was reported earlier that Tomori may leave on loan in January. It remains to be seen if the playing time he receives until then will influence his decision.
