Gareth Southgate gives an update on Chelsea star Ben Chilwell
According to Football.london, Gareth Southgate has provided an update on under-fire Chelsea star Ben Chilwell.
The 23-year-old violated pandemic protocols by attending a surprise birthday party for teammate Tammy Abraham last weekend. This saw him miss out on England’s 3-0 win over Wales last week
The Blues defender also missed the 2-1 win over Belgium yesterday after being sick.
Chilwell originally tested negative for the coronavirus. However, owing to his sickness, the decision was made to test him again.
While Southgate confirmed that the player is back at the hotel and also trained on his own, there was a lack of clarity of what exactly was wrong.
“We’ve just got to assess where he’s at because he hasn’t been able to train through the week.”
The player will now udnergo further assessment over the next couple of days.
“There’s a little bit of assessment needed over the next couple of days but he is with the group now.”
With England set to face Denmark in the coming days, it remains to be seen if Chilwell will be cleared in time to feature in that game.
If not, it will call into question his ability to take the field for Chelsea against Southampton this weekend.
