Lucas Piazon hits out at Chelsea loan policy
According to Maisfutebol (h/t The Daily Mail), Brazilian attacker Lucas Piazon has hit out at the loan policy put into effect by Chelsea.
The 26-year-old has been at Stamford Bridge since 2012. During these eight years, he has made a grand total of three appearances for Chelsea. All of them came during his first season at the club.
Piazon has since spent seven spells out on loan. The player for his part is unhappy over how he was treated.
“At first, I felt really good. I went through the U-23s, got to the first-team and, even in the first loans, I felt Chelsea had expectations and interest in me.”
While Piazon initially was on board regarding being loaned out, he grew disillusioned by it over time.
Making three appearances for a Chelsea side at the age of 18 is no mean feat. Doing so in his first season out of Brazil would have been a promising sign for Piazon.
He believed the loan spells would lead to him being given more opportunities upon his return. Unfortunately, that was not to be.
“I believed I could come back and have opportunities at any time.”
He believes rather than his talent, it was the financial aspect that the club sought to exploit through the endless loan spells.
Rather than having him develop into a first-team player, the consistent loan spells and the air of an audition he was putting up for prospective buyers.
“They send me out on loan with the expectation of selling me and making some money with me. I think that’s more or less what they think”
Loans are good as long as it benefits all parties. Sending a player out for the sake of it grows stale after a point in time. After all, all good things have to end sometime.

Not all loan spells are bad. As proven by the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham, young budding talents who make use of their opportunities thrive upon their return to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea currently have 25 players out on loan. The most prominent among them are Ross Barkley, Ruben Loftus Cheek, and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
