“Stick together” – Lampard sends out a strong message after behind-the-scenes bust-up

Frank Lampard reassures Chelsea squad after Marcos Alonso confrontation

According to The Metro, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has assured players of his backing following the bust-up with Marcos Alonso at the Hawthorns last weekend.

The Blues endured a miserable first half conceding three goals in the first half at West Bromwich Albion. Understandably, Lampard was livid and did not mince words at half time.

The players had never seen Lampard so angry before. The Blues legend was especially hard on Marcos Alonso who was at fault for at least one goal.

The Spaniard was taken off at half-time and watched on from the team bus as his teammates mounted a spirited comeback. According to the report, Lampard was annoyed at the defender not being alongside his teammates.

Already under pressure following the arrival of Ben Chilwell, Alonso’s chances of regular game time now look unlikely. Moreover, with Chilwell now returning to fitness, he is expected to become the first choice left-back at the club.

“I’m not going to disclose what goes on in the dressing room. It was disappointing to be 3-0 down at half-time. All I ask of the players whatever the situation good or bad is to stick together.”

Speaking on the issue, Lampard stated that it would be unprofessional of him to hold a grudge but decided against elaborating on the issue.

There is no ‘I’ in the team!

While Alonso is right to feel annoyed by his performance, him not staying on with his teammates does little to foster team spirit.

Lampard said the same as he felt Alonso’s action to isolate himself works against the culture he is trying to inculcate at the club.

“I can’t hold grudges we have to work together to get better and things happen over the course of a season.”

Meanwhile, Alonso looks set to be the subject of interest from Inter Milan. Now managed by Antonio Conte, the former Blues boss is keen to reunite with the Spaniard.
