Ampadu joined Chelsea from Exeter as a 16-year-old prospect. He made 12 appearances for the Blues in his first two years before he was sent on loan to Germany.

Despite the performance he put up against Spurs, it is fair to say his time at Leipzig did not work out as planned. In fact, his development has stalled over the last 12 months.

With Chelsea bringing in Thiago Silva, Ampadu’s prospects at Chelsea look bleak and he could be set for another stint out on loan.

Giggs acknowledges that Ampadu can learn a lot from Silva. However, he also realises that this could be at the cost of his player getting fewer minutes on the pitch.

“I want all the players to be playing regularly, but that sometimes isn’t the case.”

The Welsh boss placed the onus on Ampadu and left the decision of the future to the player.

“That’s a decision for Ethan. I’ve talked to him a lot about that.”

Ampadu is a talented young player who has shown his ability when given the chance. Apart from Silva, Chelsea also have Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori.

Where this leaves the Welshman remains unclear. The best bet would be for him to go out on loan. Silva will turn 36 this year and is unlikely to be a long-term option.

Meanwhile, Ampadu could potentially continue his development elsewhere and return to Chelsea a better player. With the Euros coming up, an opportunity to play regularly elsewhere will help his cause of making the Wales squad.
