According to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson (h/t Metro), Kai Havertz has requested to be given the number 29 jersey at Chelsea.
The 21-year-old is the crown jewel of what has been a summer of extravagance at the Bridge. Now that the dust is settling down and the season is nearing, matters have shifted to those on the pitch.
Havertz sported the number 29 jersey for four years at Bayer Leverkusen. He is now keen to carry on the trend at Chelsea.
The number at Chelsea is currently occupied by defender Fikayo Tomori. That should not, however, be a problem given that he is a subject of interest from Everton.
The Toffees are keen to sign the young defender on loan, which should free up the number for Havertz.
Some of the players who have worn the shirt before are Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o, and Richard Nartey.
Havertz arrives at Chelsea with a burgeoning reputation. If he goes on to reach his potential, there is no reason why the number 29 won’t go on to gain iconic status at the club.
Meanwhile, star winger Christian Pulisic has been entrusted with the iconic number 10 jersey. The American international sported number 22 last season.
