Reputed journalist confirms Chelsea have €24m agreement for African star

Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea deal for Edouard Mendy

If and when Fabrizio Romano says ‘here we go’, then a transfer is surely on the verge of completion. And that is what the Italian journalist has said on the matter of Chelsea signing Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

The transfer expert has claimed that Chelsea have a €24m agreement with Rennes for the signing of the Senegalese goalkeeper and adds that it is only a matter of time before the deal is announced.

The 28-year-old Mendy has been with Rennes for only a year, having signed from fellow French club Stade de Reims last summer in a deal worth £3.6m.

In his first season for Rennes, the Senegalese custodian played a pivotal part as they finished third in Ligue 1 and ended up qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

A move to Chelsea has been mooted for a while now, but there had been some complications in talks as Rennes were insistent on Chelsea letting Fikayo Tomori move the other way on loan.

However, it seems like the two parties have come to an agreement with Romano claiming that Mendy will join on a permanent deal for a transfer fee of €24m.

Mendy’s arrival will be another step in the massive rebuild that Frank Lampard has undertaken this summer.

The Senegal international will become the seventh major signing of the summer, following in the footsteps of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz.

Romano further adds that once the deal for Mendy is out of the way, Chelsea will turn their attention towards signing Declan Rice from West Ham United.
