Chelsea midfielder Lewis Baker joins Trabzonspor on loan

As confirmed by the club’s official site, Chelsea midfielder Lewis Baker has joined Trabzonspor on loan.

This will be the player’s eighth loan spell since joining the Blues as a youngster in 2004. He has made a single appearance for the senior side in January 2014. Baker came off the bench to replace Oscar in a 2-0 victory over Derby County in the FA Cup third round.

A promising player in his youth days, he was the club’s young player of the year in 2014. He also won the award for Chelsea goal of the season the same year.

Baker continued to shine on the international stage as he impressed for England youth sides. In fact, he won the Golden Boot as the Three Lions won the Toulon Tournament for first time in 22 years in 2016. (h/t The Guardian)

Now 25-years-old, it is fair to say that his time at Chelsea is coming to a close. According to a report by Football.london, Trabzonspor have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

In Turkey, he will once again play under ex-Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton who was also a coach at Stamford Bridge.

Now the manager at Tranzonspor, Newton will have a good idea of Baker’s abilities. While he may not have made it at Chelsea, he could make a name for himself elsewhere.

Baker has enjoyed loan spells both inside and out of England. He has played for Vitesse Arnhem, Fortuna Dusseldorf, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday. Leeds United, Milton Keynes Dons and Middlesbrough.

During his tiime at Vitesse, he helped the club win the 2016/17 KNVB Cup, the only major trophy the Dutch side have won in their history.
