Chelsea turn attention towards Edouard Mendy
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea will now turn their focus on Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after completing the seventh signing of the summer.
The Blues completed the transfer of Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. The German became the seventh arrival this summer following in the footsteps of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Xavier Mbuyamba, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva.
Having restructured the squad quite a bit, it seems like Frank Lampard is still not quite done, with a new goalkeeper next on the agenda. And, it is understandable where the Chelsea boss is coming from.
The Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has failed to live up to expectations. And backup shot-stopper Willy Caballero is nearing his forties and cannot be counted upon week in week out.
Thus, a new goalkeeper should be a priority for the Blues. While a move for LOSC Lille’s Mike Maignan had been mooted, the club has now moved on from the Frenchman.
Instead, Chelsea will now focus on bringing in Rennes shot-stopper Edouard Mendy, as per the aforementioned report.
The 28-year-old Mendy has been with Rennes for only a year, having signed from fellow French club Stade de Reims last summer in a deal worth £3.6m.
In his first season for Rennes, the Senegalese custodian played a pivotal part as they finished third in Ligue 1 and ended up qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

As per the report, Chelsea have already had a £14m bid rejected for the goalkeeper. However, the Blues are expected to return with an improved offer for the 28-year-old.
An experienced customer coming on the back of a strong season, Mendy has the qualities needed to improve our goalkeeping department. Given Chelsea’s success rate in the market this summer, we can expect the Ligue 1 star at the Bridge in the near future.
