Chelsea are interested in Manchester United star Sergio Romero
According to The Athletic, Chelsea are keeping an eye on Manchester United star Sergio Romero.
The Argentine has fallen down the pecking order following the return of Dean Henderson. The youngster arrives with a burgeoning reputation having impressed while on loan at Sheffield United.
With David de Gea the current number one and Henderson expected to challenge him, this leaves Romero as the third choice.
It would seem unfair on a goalkeeper who has been dependable when called upon. In fact, United’s strength in the goalkeeping department could work out in our favour.
Romero is keen to garner more playtime in the lead up to next summer’s Copa America. Being the third choice at United will hardly afford him enough time to make an impact, if at all. (h/t MEN)
That is not the case at Stamford Bridge, where there is need for a dependable shotstopper. Kepa Arrizabalaga has lacked consistency forcing manager Frank Lampard to seek competition.
In Romero he may find just that. Not only is the 33-year-old a dependable player, but he also has Premier League experience.
United value the Argentine between £8m and £10m. Given the expensive summer we have had, Romero will be a cheap yet effective option. More so he fits the budget we had set aside to sign Mike Maignan.
Although the Blues are pursuing Edouard Mendy, Romero is not just a cheaper alternative but also one with top level experience.

Both Everton and Aston Villa are in contention for the Argentine’s signature. Although the latter was leading the chase, they could find it hard to meet Romero’s wages.
The 33-year-old may not be the most glamorous keeper out there. There is little doubt that he is effective. His record of 39 clean sheets from 61 games is a testament to that.
