Frank Lampard reveals why Chelsea signed Thiago Silva
According to The Express, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed what he expects from new signing Thiago Silva.
The Brazilian veteran became the club’s fifth senior signing of the summer. A vastly experienced player he brings a number of qualities to the field.
“I expect him to come and bring that, bring his experience, leadership and his qualities. It is going to be very important for us.”
The captain at PSG, Silva led the French champions to the Champions League final. Despite losing to Bayern Munich, the Brazilian did better than most other defenders in shackling Robert Lewandowski.
A leader on and off the pitch, the 35-year-old’s qualities will bring organization and steel to a backline that has been lacking both.
Moreover, with a young squad being built, Lampard believes Silva’s presence as a role model could be a gamechanger.
“There were games afterwards when I was probably asking for more voice and some more leadership in different ways and he brings that naturally straightaway.”
According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t Express), PSG made a late play at trying to convince Silva to stay on for another year.
Fortunately for us, the Brazilian had already reached an agreement with Chelsea. The Ligue 1 champions’ loss is our gain as the Samba star will don the Blue of Chelsea next season.
Bringing in Silva is a shrewd move for Chelsea. Despite his advanced age, he has shown he has what it takes to compete at the highest level. A no-nonsense player, his uncompromising approach will also help keep the standards high in our backline.
