“I’m not happy” – Lampard critical of Chelsea’s performance in abject defeat to Bayern

Frank Lampard criticized Chelsea stars for their performance against Bayern Munich

Frank Lampard has always been a no-nonsense player who gave it his all on the pitch. A Chelsea legend, he was never afraid of speaking his mind and calling spade a spade.

According to the Metro, he did exactly that in the post-match press conference following the 4-1 humbling against Bayern Munich.

The Blues did not get off to the best of starts as they found themselves 2-0 down before half an hour played. Tammy Abraham reduced the deficit when he pounced on Manuel Neuer’s mistake.

Chelsea showed heart but it was not enough

The defeat brought his promising debut season at the Bridge to an anti-climatic end. Overcoming a three-goal lead with some of his best players missing was always going to be a tough ask.

“I’m not happy. You don’t want to lose a game here.”

However, that was as good as it got for Chelsea. Bayern scored twice more to end the night and the tie in a comfortable fashion.

Lampard for his part was not happy. He felt his side gifted Bayern three of their goals and that the team performed alright.

Abraham reduced Bayern’s lead before half-time

He believes his side did well to give themselves hope after conceding two early goals. Bayern is a much more experienced side in the competition and that came to the fore yesterday.

“When you match up our Champions League appearances to theirs and you look through the team, I think you can see a big reason there in what we’ve seen tonight.”

Chelsea have grand ambitions of pushing on and competing for major honours next season. However, to be able to do so, the players will have to cut back on making individual errors.

Players will have to be on their toes while facing top teams. These sides have the quality to ensure they punish any concession made. Bayern did exactly that last night.

“We have individual errors that gift them goals and at this level that will finish you off.”

Frank Lampard knows that there is still work to be done

Lampard insists that his Chelsea side is still work in progress. He believes there is still much to come from his team in the coming years.

The Blues also indicated that the club is keen to invest in the transfer market, having missed out on two windows in a row.

The loss to Bayern clearly showed that we need an injection of quality to compete with the best teams on the continent. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner will address that to an extent, but we will need more than just them to get to where we want.
