Chelsea in advanced negotiations for Thiago Silva capture
According to The Athletic, Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Paris Saint-Germain captain and Brazil defender Thiago Silva this summer.
The experienced centre-back is set to leave the French champions with his contract expiring at the end of the ongoing campaign. PSG’s UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich this weekend is likely to be his final game for the club. (h/t Mirror)
Over the past couple of days, reports of Chelsea’s interest in the centre-back have been doing the rounds. And, it is now being claimed that the club are in advanced negotiations to land the 35-year-old. (h/t The Athletic)
It is no secret that the Blues are in the market for defensive reinforcements. Strengthening at the back is very much warranted after a poor campaign in the defensive side of things, as we conceded 54 goals in the Premier League – the most by any team in the top half of the table.
None of the four senior centre-backs at Frank Lampard’s disposal – Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma, were consistent enough. So, a new centre-back was always going to be a priority for the club this summer.
The likes of Declan Rice and Lewis Dunk had been linked with a move to the Bridge. However, it seems like the club is settling on an unlikely solution in the form of Thiago Silva. (h/t The Athletic)
The report states that the negotiations are not completely over the line yet. But the defender could be offered a two-year deal, which goes against the club’s policy of handing one-year contracts to players over the age of 30. (h/t The Athletic)

Given Silva’s age, there is bound to be plenty of skepticism surrounding his potential arrival this summer.
Nevertheless, his defensive nous, years of experience would bring a lot of value to the team. And his leadership presence is something that our backline was crying out loud for this past season. He would be a solid short-term fix, if a deal does go through.
